MARKET UPDATE -
MALAYSIA
Like a number of ‘Asian Tigers’,
Malaysia
has gone through a rapid pace of industrialization and development over the past 30 40 years. Along with an increasing affluent society, people have adopted the ‘throw away’ lifestyle, preferring to use disposables rather than reusable items. In the last 2 years, inadequate waste disposal, environmental issues on landfill and the wanton discharge of hazardous waste have surfaced and caused the Government waste generation and management it is not sustainable. The problem is now 0.8 kg while it is even higher in the urban areas with 1.5 kg per person per day.
Waste is one of the biggest environmental issues faced by most cities in developing countries. Every day,
Malaysia
’s public and industries produce over 18,000 tonnes of waste or 6,570,000 tonnes a year. It is increasing at a rate of 5% a year and will reach a staggering 27,000 tonnes per day by 2014.
The problem is compounded by the rate of urbanization which has risen from 55.1 percent in 1995 to 61.8 percent in 2000 and expected to reach 66.8 percent in 2005. This has cerated additional pressure as the national average waste generated per person per day is 0.8 kg while it is even higher in the urban areas with 1.5 kg per person per day. Waste management cost the Government RM 400 million in 2003 which account 50% of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Budget.
